Topic Sentence: Answers the question in a complete sentence, includes author's name and title.

Intro to Evidence: Provide at least 2 - 3 sentences of context about what is happening in the story that helps prove your response to the prompt.  Explain the point in the story that you pulled your quote from.

Evidence: A strong quote from the text that backs up your response to the quote.  You should begin the quote by explaining who said it, for instance Chino says, " or Quinonez writes, "

Discussion of Evidence: Explain the meaning of your quote in your own words.  Then explain how it proves your answer to your question.

POST YOUR RESPONSES RELATED TO CHAPTERS 3 AND 4 IN THE COMMENTS BELOW.  ONLY POST HERE ON CHAPTERS 3 & 4.

  1. What was the real reason that Chino denied Bodega's offer?

Willie Bodega is determined to make Chino apart of his business, but Chino refuses to be apart of it. Chinos tells Willie that he doesn't want to join him because he is very busy. Bodega believes this because Chino is still attending college but he still tells him to think about it. The real reason that Chino declines Bodega's offer is because he is afraid of losing his wife Blanca. He states," I had no idea what good deed I had done in my life to deserve Blanca, all I knew was that she was there. She wouldn't like me getting involved in any of this". This shows how much Blanca means to Chino. Chino stood strong behind his answer and didn't even want to consider it because he knew Blanca would not approve of it.

    1. Why doesn't Chino just join the movement with Bodega?

Chino doesn't think about joining because he doesn't want to disapoint Blanca. In the book Chino says "Hey, Sapo, come on, leave Blanca out of this" (pg.41). This shows that every time Sapo mentioned Blanca he thinks twice to act upon an action that has to do with the streets because he doesn't want to disobey Blanca and also loose her. Since Chino also thinks about joining the movement, thinking and being mentioned about Blanca distracts him from joining the movement. This shows that mentioning Blanca to Chino is not a good idea and bothers him, also because he doesn't want Blanca to be mentioned in street work.

  3. What does Negra's name symbolize?

    Bodega's Dreams by Ernesto Quinonez

Negra's name symbolizes someone who is always getting into trouble. Chapter 4 was about how Chino was refusing to work with Bodega. When Chino was leaving to his house, Sapo stopped to tell him "Ya know, Chino, at least I admit I only think about myself. But you, you play it off as if you really care about other people when it's always been you... Go home to your church girl. Go home and ask her about her aunt Vera. And, Chino don't talk to me cuz you got leprosy ma man. " This is saying that Sapo was really mad because he believes that Bodega is giving him a huge opportunity to be noticed and Chino blew him off. Also, it says that Sapo expected for Chino to do as he is told, but now Chino is his own person who wants to have an actual future, with no problems.

    1. Your quote doesn't support your topic sentence or answer the question about Negra. It is unrelated and then brings up a different point about Sapo which makes this post seem confused and hard to follow. Your quote and explanation should always relate back to your topic sentence and an answer to the question. 7/10

  4. Why is chino always out hanging with his boys instead of being their for his family

Chino is always hanging out with his boys because at home he cant do what he wants to do in his house so he hangs out with his boys and does whatever he wants over their. Chino's boys dont believe that he's the man of the house because when he was smoking a joint he was smoking to much like he doesnt get to do it at home. In the text chinos boys say" sapito, Chino is memorex, one fucken joint and the nigga is gone thass cause his lady dont let him smoke inna house." this is saying that blanca wears the pants in the family because if she is not letting him do what he wants to dop in his own home then he is going to go somewhere else where he can do whatever he wants. Chino denied his friends by saying "she has no say in what i do", but in his mind he was saying they didnt believe me, but they let me get away with the lie. This is also saying that his boys were right that he has no type of control over blanca she controls him. Even though Chino should be supporting his family 100% and not being out their smoking joints with his friends that have no future

  5. Why is the fact that Chino paints R.I.P.s important to Bodega?

In chapter 4 of “Bodega Dreams” by Ernesto Quinonez the fact that Chino paints R.I.P.s is important to Bodega because it helps him with his plan for El Barrio. When Chino goes to Bodega to hear his plan for El Barrio, Bodega remembers that Sapo told him that Chino paints R.I.P.s and he thinks it`s good that he does so. Bodega explains why he finds that to be good in page 36 where it says: “People remember you as someone who tried to make this neighborhood a better place. And that`s good.” One of the main reasons behind Bodega`s plan for El Barrio is to make the people in the neighborhood feel as if they`re worth something and R.I.P.s help with this plan because they memorialize people. If someone from El Barrio knew that when they died, they would be remembered with an R.I.P. painting, that would make them feel worth something because they know they won`t be forgotten after they die. Also, Bodega explains why he thinks Chino will be very helpful if he agrees to work with his lawyer Nazario for the plan for El Barrio. We see this on page 36 where it says, “Nazario the lawyer and his sidekick Julio College, both Ricans helping Ricans.” Bodega mentions in the text how Puerto Ricans are treated as if they don`t matter, but with the R.I.P.s, this will show that they do matter because they will never be forgotten since the paintings will always be there. The R.I.P.s can make the community a better place because people will stop doing risky/violent things, such as, robbing or shooting people because the R.I.P. paintings will help them feel important and they`ll have a reason to stop doing these crimes.

  6. Why Willie Bodega wants to buy and renovate new buildings in Spanish Harlem?

Willie Bodega wants to have a better neighborhood ,also wants people to feel proud of him, being able to be called the "King". Willie Bodega is trying to find real constructure that will help him renovate buildings, literally nobody thought that Puerto Ricans would get to this point in life. "I placed fourteen families in the building cheap rent too, you know what that means chino?... Yea that too , but what means is forteen families that would riot for bodega , fourteen families that would take a bulet for bodega". This is very intelligent and nice of him bringing up this idea and renovating buildings. Hes being open minded , trying new things that would benefit the community. On the other hand Willie Bodega doing all this contructiion will make people be proud because they really need new buildings to live in , also building its something big that people can do , it takes hard work. Being called a "King" is like being a role model for the community.

However chino still looks towards sapo even though blanca dislike him, sapo always be his "pana'. 1. Post #1: Good analytical question and answer that shows insight into Bodega's character. Make sure you explain the quote fully -- you don't talk about the fact that he is doing this nice work to get something in return. 8.5/10

Post #2: Make sure you proofread for any errors in spelling/punctuation/grammar. You should always capitalize names and the first letter of a new sentence. You lose points for little mistakes like this. Also, your quote and explanation don't explain WHY Blanca doesn't like Sapo, it just shows that she doesn't like him. Make sure you find a quote that STRONGLY supports your answer to the question. 7.5/10

  8. Why is Bodega so stuck and hard-headed into having Chino as a helper?

In chapter 3 and 4 of "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez we see how Bodega keeps asking to see Chino and get his help to create a better future for El Barrio. Quinonez is trying to send a bigger message to the audience. A message that includes some type of inference. We see how he calls Sapo to tell him to go get Chino cause he wants to speak to him. When Chino goes and speak to him he gives Chino millions of stories, explanations etc. But at the end Chino does not want to work with him he wants a better future for himself, his wife and his baby on the way. Chino does not really know the reason why Bodega wants him but Bodega even tries to buy him in a way. "Come on, bro. Sapo told me you were busy and shit, with your job at the A & P and your night school. But, like, I want you around" (pg 38). We see how even though he knows Chino is a busy men he still wants to do plans with him he wants him in his future. Bodega seems hard-headed about wanting Chino for his ideas about the future for the neighborhood. "Mira, Chino you need somethin', anythin', come see me" (pg 39). In this quote we see how Bodega tries buying Chino into agreeing to be part of his side and his group. If he wants him so badly there must be another beneficial idea for Bodega. Later on in the book we see that this beneficial idea for wanting Chino is a women that he once had in his past and wants to appear again in his future but to keep this time, and Chino is a big key and help into making this dream come true so he really needs him.

  9. Why cant Bodega just find someone else that is not Chino to be his helper?

In chapter 3 and 4 in "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez we see how Bodega was really determined on Chino only. In the text Sapo tells Chino that Bodega was counting on him. Bodega was disappointed when Chino said no to his offer of being his helper to create a better future for El Barrio. Bodega had sometime looking for someone perfect for the job and Chino turned him down. "Bodega's been looking for a guy to work with Nazario for sometime. And I thought of you...". Sapo thought of Chino because he was close and trust worthy enough to work with the great Bodega and his ideas for the future. Later on in the book we see how Bodega did not only want Chino for the better of El Barrios future but also for the benefit of his too. He wanted to find his first love Vera and Chino was the key into finding her.

  10. How do these characters Chino and Sapo feel about one another? What is the root cause of these feelings?

In chapter 3 and 4 in "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez Sapo feels embarrassed because of him. Chino feels that his blind. The root is Bodega and what Bodega wants. Sapo feels embarrassed where it says '"...and then when he meets you for the job Do you know how that." Sapo said jabbing a finger in his chest,"reflects on me?'" Sapo feels embarrassed because he talked all the good things about Chino to Bodega. When Chino goes to Bodega he don't want the job and laugh about what Bodega wants to do which is related to the past. Chino feels Sapo is blind where it says "... And Bodega might talk all this shit about helping the community and shit like that but what it all comes down to is making money."' Chino feels that Sapo doesn't see what he sees. Chino sees that what Bodega want is at the end it all benefits him.
