Bodega Dreams Week Two Round 9
Post an analytical question and a TIED paragraph to answer it about something that happened in Round 9 in the space below. You may respond to someone else's question if you introduce NEW IDEAS/QUOTES! DO NOT REPEAT A QUESTION WITH THE SAME ANSWER AS ANOTHER STUDENT!
why is chino bringing Sapo into the house?
ReplyDeleteChino brings Sapo into the house because Sapo has to take Chino to meet with Bodega. "Yo Chino, bro, like Bodega wants to meet you" this shows that Sapo had to make Chino meet with Bodega.
Why does Bodega want to meet Chino?
Bodega wants to meet Chino because Bodega needs a favor. " B'cause, Chino, i'm going t' ask you for something". This shows that Bodega only want to meet with Chino so chino can do favors for him and not to give Chino a job or help him with anything Chino needs.
These only count as one response. The first question is not analytical and doesn't add to your or the class' understanding of the story. Also, your second post is not specific enough. WHAT is the favor that Bodega wants from Chino? You need to provide this information and other general background about what is going on in the story. 6/10 Please redo.

ReplyDeleteWho killed Alberto Salazar?
ReplyDeleteIn the book bodega dreams by Ernesto Quinonez in chapter nine of the story a man named Alberto Salazar was killed. he was a man who posed as a threat to willy bodega and his lawyer. I think that bodega killed him. One piece of evidence to show is on pg 82 when chino said " Salazar had suffered a serious bite to the shoulder. That's when i knew who had killed him". This proves that bodega killed Salazar because in the chapter he had been the only one with intent with killing him and chino figured it out.
Question2: Why does bodega want to marry Vera.
In chapter nine of the book bodega dreams the character Willy bodega wants to marry a woman named Vera but why. One piece of evidence to show this is on page 78 when Willy said "Of course she'll leave that pendejo. She never wanted to marry him in the first place. It was her mother who pushed her" this proves that willy can marry Vera because he said the only reason Vera married a rich man was because her mother made her do it she never loved the rich guy she loved Bodega.
Make sure to capitalize the title, names and the beginning of each sentence. You lose points for these errors!! You need to give the reason that Bodega has "intent to kill Salazar." You say this but don't explain it.
DeleteFor your second question it is your job to explain why Bodega wants to marry Vera. Give a reason instead of saying "but why?"
Both posts 6/10

ReplyDeleteWhy was Willie Bodega so confident that he would simply be able to marry Veronica?
ReplyDeleteWillie Bodega is basing his confidence off of experiences with Veronica at the age of 17. Willie explains that Veronica never wanted to marry the Cuban because she was actually in love with Willie. Her parents forced her to marry the Cuban because he was very wealthy. Willie explains the words told to him by Veronica the day before the wedding. He states, "She said she loved me. She said that she didn't care if I didn't have any money. The problem was, she said, I didn't have any vision of how to get it." Willie Bodega is so confident because he now has enough money and is very successful. Although Bodega now meets all the standards that Veronica has, He cannot depend on what she said years ago because her thoughts and standards may have changed.
Why was Chino treated differently at the Met then he was at El Museo del Barrio?
According to Chinos experiences, He felt that he was treated differently at the Met than he was at El Museo Del Barrio. He states, "El Museo Del Barrio was the only museum where I could look at the paintings without having a guard follow me from wing to wing". The reason he was treated differently at Met is because it is a place where tourist visit. When people from low-income communities visit tourist attractions they get looked at askance because the security guards think that they are up to no good. At El Museo Del Barrio, most of the visitors are from the neighborhood so the security guards are already accustomed to them visiting.
Excellent explanation of what is going on in the book (context) and how it supports your answer. 10/10
DeleteHow do these characters feel about one another? Blanca doesn't want Chino hanging out with Sapo because he is a bad influence and doesn't want him doing drugs because Blanca is having a baby.If Sapo woundn't have jumped in that Italian would have been killed me,you know that.
ReplyDeleteWhen is this quote said? You don't give any context to explain the background of what is going on in the story. Even I don't know if this is a quote or what it relates to and I've read this book and taught it numerous times. 4/10
DeleteWho killed Alberto Salazar ?
ReplyDeleteAccording to Chapter 9 , i think Willie Bodega killed Alberto Salazar because Alberto was a threat to Bodega and Bodega's lawyer. On pg 82 , it said, "Salazar had suffered a serious bite to the shoulder. That's when i knew who had killed him" This proves that it was Bodega because how can Chino found out that somebody else kill Alberto and Bodega is really close with Chino so Bodega must have told him that it was him but want him to keep it closed so that it won't be spread around and then they find Bodega and puts him in jail. If that happens, Chino will lose the respect and trust from Bodega.
Your explanation of the quote is problematic. Remember back to chapter one where Sapo is introduced and connect that to the details of what happened to Salazar's body. Also, include more context about what is going on in the story when this event occurs -- imagine your reader has not read the book. 7/10
DeleteHow is Chino treated by others because of his appearance?
ReplyDeleteChino is treated negatively by others because of his appearance. When Chino goes to El Museo del Barrio he notices that the paintings are written in both English and Spanish for the convenience of the people. He liked being in the museum because no one followed him around because he looked suspicious. He talks about his experiences in other museums in the following quote: "At the Met I got suspicious looks. First the guards checked my shoes to see if they were once alligators. When they saw my worn sneakers, they treated me like I might pull a knife from my back pocket and go slashing Goyas." This quote shows how Chino is treated like a criminal just because he does not wear expensive clothing, such as shoes made out of alligator skin or look like the type of person who would have a lot of money. Chino cannot afford to buy these things because he does not have the money for it. Since poor people sometimes steal because they have no money, people assume this about Chino just because of the way he looks or what he wears. Having come from El Barrio, Chino is seen as a criminal because urban neighborhoods tend to have a reputation for things such as, shootings, robbery, selling drugs, etc.
This is pretty similar to Pierre's post. When you are posting, skim over the questions other students have already asked. If you post on the same question, make sure you introduce new information. For example, in this question, you could have said,"I agree with Pierre about how Chino is treated differently based on his appearance. This develops the motif of racism/stereotyping..." Build on the other student's responses instead of repeating the same ideas. 7.5/10
Deletewho do you think killed Salazar?
ReplyDeleteI think the person who killed Salazar was bodega and Nazario. According to Chapter 9 Salazar was a reporter who was killed by a serious bite to the shoulder. bodega and Nazario might have killed Salazar because he was catching up to their plan and they might been scared that Salazar caught up theirs plan and decided to kill them, because they didn't want to go to jail.
"but i needed to find out more, in case Alberto Salazar's was the same guys i heard bodega and Nazario talk about that night at the Tanio towers"
You must explain how the quote supports your answer. Also include more context about what is happening in the story. For instance, what is "the plan" you're talking about? What's the connection between Nazario, Bodega and Salazar? 6.5/10
DeleteWhy does Bodega want to meet Chino?
ReplyDeleteBodega wants to meet Chino because Bodega needs a favor. I think Bodega wants to keep chino in his group so he has someone that goes to collage help him when he gets arrested. " Because, Chino, i'm going t' ask you for something". This shows that Bodega only want to meet with Chino so chino can do favors for him and not to give Chino a job or help him with anything Chino needs.
You should explain exactly what the favor is, why Chino has to do it, etc. Also why would it matter to Bodega if someone is in college? Connect this point to your quote by explaining more details. 6/10
DeleteHow are Bodega and Salazar connected?
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 9 of "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez we can infer how Bodega and Salazar are connected. When Chino turns on the television to watch the news, a reporter reports the murder of Alberto Salazar. On page 82 the news explains who Salazar was: "He had been a reporter for El Diario/La Prensa working on an investigation of a drug lord in East Harlem." This quote shows how Bodega and Salazar were connected because Bodega is the "drug lord in East Harlem" and Salazar was trying to investigate/expose Bodega. If Salazar exposed Bodega that would mean Bodega would have to pay the consequences of being a "drug lord" by going to jail. Chino had been overhearing Bodega talking to Nazario, Bodega`s lawyer, about Salazar the past few days and Chino was wondering why they were talking so much about him. Bodega was probably planning on how he should have Salazar killed so that he wouldn`t be able to expose him.
Good explanation and context. 10/10
Delete.Does Vera still love Bodega
ReplyDeleteWe personally dont know because in round 9 it speaks about mainly how bodega loves her and is trying to marry her. Bodega doesnt realize that Vera's feelings for him could have changed she probably loves her husband way more than bodega because she's been seperated from bodega so shes not going to chase somebody that is not in her life like her husband is. In round 9 bodega said "She said she loved me. She said that she didnt care if i didnt have money. She said she wouldn't mind being poor for a few years. Then her mother came out and yelled at her to get back inside. So i left thinking shit that bitch don't deserve me". This shows that when he left he left and never came back to her life so why would Vera be interested in Bodega for leaving her, he should have stood up to vera's mother if he really wanted to be with vera. This also gives vera a reason not to be interested in Bodega because why leave and not come back to her life, she not going to love someone that is not comitted to her
Good, analytical question and explanation of your thinking. You could include a bit more context explaining who the characters are and what their relationship is like. Also, make sure you capitalize all names and don't make grammatical errors. 8/10
DeleteWhy is Bodega and Sapo being so secretive about their plans?
ReplyDeleteThey are doing something bad and they don't want people knowing too much because then they wont have the biggest advantage. In the book Bodega wanted to meet up with Chino again and Sapo was taking him to where they were going to meet when chino asked " 'Why does Bodega want to see me anyways I already told him when she arrives'. I headed towards the bathroom. 'Fuck should I know. I'm like the fucken I.R.A. I just follow orders'. 'Bullshit, pana, you know more than you let on'. I brushed my teeth real quick'. ' Withholding info is an advantage'." This quote is saying how even though Bodega want Chino to help them, they aren't trusting him enough to let him in. Also, even if he is Sapo's best friend, Bodega was just using Chino to get Vera and now that he has no interest in him anymore, except with some law requirements he needs to complete his master plan.
How is Bodega's plan advancing in El Barrio?
Chino is getting frustrated with all the secrecy, but also he just want to get over the situation that he got into, but its more like the mess that Sapo dragged him into. In the book Chino insisted to talk about Bodega's plan with bodega " 'Yeah? so are you goin' to tell me how Bodega got all his power or, like you going to have an advantage?' 'No advantage there, Chino. Thass no secret. Anyone in El Barrio from the university of the street knows that the Italians controlled the neighborhood. They ran the numbah, they ran the drugs.' Look Willie, you said you wanted to ask me something. What is it you want to ask me?' ". This quote explains how Chino's part is not done yet. It also shows how bodega has connections with the people who can make a real impact in El Barrio or wants to have anyways. Even if he doesn't have the connection yet, Chino knows Bodega will soon and he is going to have a part of it and if not that then something else that is big.
Post #1: Good quote and explanation of your thinking. Try and be as specific as possible in your response -- explain what exactly "something bad," is. Make an inference about what you think they are up to. 8/10
DeletePost #2: This post is missing context to fully explain your question/answer -- what situation did he get in? What mess? Also, the answer and explanation don't relate to your question. There are also grammatical errors that you could catch if you proofread. 6/10
Why does sapo tells chino the best person to ask for help is nazario?
ReplyDeleteIn Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quinonez chapter 9, chino tells sapo about a situation between blanca and her friend but sapo prefer to leave it to nazario since he has more mentality and is more confidential , also has more experience. Sapo and chino were driving to fifth avenue and suddently chino asked sapo if he knew someone that is hard up to get married, and help blanca friend to get a green card, getting a green card its illegal. Sapo really dont know someone that would get maried, his answer was to ask nazario for help. For example "Why did i even try? nazario might help, nigga knows everything" This shows that nazario might help chino in this situation because he was a guy nobody played with he can look for someone and nobody could take him as a joke , nazario really confident and can help chino get a person to married blanca friend for a green card.
Capitalize names! Proofread for errors in spelling/grammar! Explain more of the context -- why would Sapo say this about Nazario? What is Sapo's opinion of him? Give more information about their relationship. 7.5/10
DeleteWhat was the difference of how people were treated in the Met and in El Museo del barrio?
ReplyDeleteIn Bodega Dreams by Erenesto Quinonez chapter 9, Bodega sends Sapo to get Chino to go to El Museo del barrio to speak to him. Bodega speaks to chino about when Vera is coming and how they are going to interact with each other. Bodega uses the paintings of El Museo to explain to Chino about his story with Vera. As he speaks Chino spaces out and thinks about the different treatment people like him receive in El Museo del Barrio compared to the Met. For example, "El Museo del Barrio was the only museum where I could look at the paintings without having a guard following me from wing to wing," (79) This quote represents the discrimination of the Met just because someone was Latin and from a low income. Chino explains how freely he feels in El Museo del Barrio compared to having a heavy load on you like someone watching you. In Chinos eyes the Met thought less of people like him.
This is pretty similar to Pierre's post. When you are posting, skim over the questions other students have already asked. If you post on the same question, make sure you introduce new information. For example, in this question, you could have said,"I agree with Pierre about how Chino is treated differently based on his appearance. This develops the motif of racism/stereotyping..." ReplyDeleteHow did Chino know who killed Alberto Salazar? Nazario and Bodega was speaking about him. They refer to him as a problem and have to do something about him. Chino comes home and turn on the T.V and sees that the man Alberto Salazar is the same man that was a problem to Nazario and Bodega was killed. For example "In addition to the gunshot wound, Salazar had suffered a serious bite to the shoulder." This shows that Chino believes that is Sapo he knows Sapo since little. Sapo is known for biting people during fights in the neighborhood.

DeleteWho do you think killed Salazar? and why?
ReplyDeleteIn Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quinonez in chapter 8-9 we see how the name Salazar is kept being mentioned. When Bodega sends Sapo to go get Chino so that Chino and Bodega can talk about their deal revolving Vera and the new renovated apartment we see how Nazario and Bodega were having a conversation that was being over heard by Sapo, Chino and Nene. The conversation was about this guy named Salazar. Salazar is a reporter that was doing an investigation about a drug lord in El Barrio. Obviously the drug lord is Bodega. In page 70 Quinonez writes, "They keep mentionin' this guy Alberto Salazar", Nene said this. This quote is basically implying that there is something fishy going on between the drug lord Bodega and the reporter Salazar. What else could it be? Well, when Nazario and Bodega finished their conversation, Nazario went outside and asked Sapo to speak to him. "Sapo, Nazario said, walking past me but stopping a moment to pat my shoulder on the way as if to say, good job, Sapo, we have to talk" (pg 71). This quote gave me the thoughts that right after Bodega and Nazario finished talking about the reporter looking for a drug lord (Bodega) Nazario asks Sapo to speak to him alone. Later on in chapter 9 we see how Chino is home watching the news and they say something about Alberto Salazar. "…In addition to the gunshot wound, Salazar had suffered a serious bite to the shoulder. That's when I knew who had killed him" (pg 82). I think that Bodega sent Sapo to kill Alberto Salazar so that he would never find out that the drug lord he was doing his investigation on was Bodega. Bodega does anything to save himself and Sapo works for him so he has to do what he is told to.
This is pretty similar to other posts. When you are posting, skim over the questions other students have already asked. If you post on the same question, make sure you introduce new information. DeleteWhy would Sapo kill Alberto Salazar?
ReplyDeleteIn Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quinonez, the reason why Sapo would kill Slazar is because, Slazar was working on a investigation about a big drug lord in East Harlem (Willie Bodega). This affected Bodega's drug buisness because, Bodega now had to be low about his moves. Since this affected Bodega's buisness something had to be done about it, therefore Bodega sent Sapo to kill Salazar. One quote that shows the reason why Sapo killed Salazr is, "He had been a repoter for El Diario/La Prensa working on an investigation of a drug lord in East Harlem... In addition to the gunshot wound, Slazar had suffered a serious bite to the shoulder. That's when i knew who had killed him."(pg. 82). This quote shows how the fact that Salazar was looking for the drug lord, Bodega sent Sapo to do his dirty work and kill Slazar so Bodega's drug buisness wouldn't get destroy and also so Bodega wouldn't be wanted for killing someone and being a drug lord so he sent Sapo to do his dirty work so Bodega wont make himself hot.
How did the Young Lords affect, El barrio's life?
ReplyDeleteIn the book Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quinonez, the Young Lords affected El barrio's life because, everyone in the neighborhood was influenced by them in a positive way because the Young Lords did positively things that benefited the citizens such as, free food-drives, clothes-drives, and fought for Puerto Rican rights. This effected El barrio because, they became united and fought for each other. One quote that shows how Bodega ex appreciated him and loved him because he influenced and help the society become a better place is, "She loved me, she said that she didn't care if i didn't have any money"(pg.79) This quote shows Bodega's ex loved him because he wanted the best for the community and didn't care about money as long as everyone was happy, safe and equal. Since he wanted all this for the people in El barrio it affected them because they all wanted to become successful and be equal like all normal Americans, therefore they fought for it.
Great job connecting the film to the text. I think there are quotes (in Chapter 3 -4) that better support your point, but otherwise, great post. 9/10
Delete"why was Bodega so confident in marrying Vera?"
ReplyDeleteIn the beginning of round 9 bodega talks about how and his plan on marrying vera. Chino meets Bodega in the art gallery and they talk about Bodega and veras relationship back in the days. i chose this question because as Bodega was talking about Vera being in love with him he also says that when she returns he will marry her. Vera currently has a husband in this book and that is part of the reason i chose this question, Bodega is extremely confident in marrying that he is planning out how he is going to do it. In the middle of there conversation Bodega says "she dosnt love that cabron". Bodega basically calls her husband an asshole in spanish. Then he says Vera only married her because of his wealth and her mother forced them into it. those could be there reasons why Bodega is very confident that Vera will leave her husband to be with him.
"why did they kill Albert Salazar?"
This is a question that i have seen asked a lot and there can be many reasons to this moving on deeper into the story. At the ending of round 9 they discover a body in the river with gunshot wounds. Chino found out by flipping channels and finding the news. They said the guys name was Alberto Salazar and he was a news reported. When watching this chino remembers listing to Nazario and Bodegas conversation about this guy. The news also said he suffered from a big bite mark in his shoulder. And thats when Chino knew whop it was, he starts to talk about the old teacher they had and how Sapo bit him in school because he was put into a headlock. Chino knew that Bodega sent Sapo to get rid of Salazar and thats when he killed him. that is why i chose this question, we don't exactly know the reason all we know is who did it. on page 86 Chino say that salazar knew to much about the drug and that " He was investigating spanish harlem". we know he was a news reported and we also know that Bodega wanted to fix spanish harlem and he was really patio net about it. Maybe salazar wanted to expose the bad things about spanish harlem but for all we know they had got kill him for a big reason.
Make sure you proofread for careless errors ("whop," "patio net" etc.) -- they cause you to lose points on an otherwise strong post! You do an EXCELLENT job of giving context before your quotes.
DeleteHowever, try and think of more original questions to get the highest grade possible. These questions have been asked and similar answers have been given. 8/10
Jonathan Henriquez:
ReplyDeleteWho killed Alberto Salazar ?
In the story "Bodega dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez there was a man named Alberto Salazar who was killed by a unknown aslant. Alberto Salazar was hired to create problems for bodega. When chino looked at the news they were talking about the murder, chino knew who killed him.In the story it said "Salazar had a bite mark on his shoulder and chino knew who murdered Salazar". This mean that that one of his friends did the murder maybe his friends
Whay did Chino go back to Bodega?
In the story Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quinonez chino goes back to bodega for something in return. Chino want a better life for blanca and the up coming baby. He wanted to find out were blanca's aunt Vera for Bodega. Bodega loves Vera and wants to marry her. In the story chino says "where could I find this women and fulfill my part of the deal. This mean that he wanted the deal so he can move in a new house with his family for half of what there paying for originally. This show his loyal promise because he did find her and now Bodega want to marry her before she leaves
Instead of saying "maybe his friends," state a strong hypothesis about who committed the murder and back it up with a clear explanation and evidence. Be more specific. Your second blog is about a chapter from week one. Try and ask a question about this week's reading. 6.5/10 for both
