  1. Why doesn't Chino like Nazario?

One day when Chino was on his way to work he met up with Nazario on the streets. He noticed that Nazario received lots of attention from the people in the streets. This is because Nazario was the one who would go around and carry out favors for Bodega. Nazario was a con man who would manipulate people in order to get what he wants. Chino described Nazario by saying, "unlike Bodega, who said exactly what was on his mind, Nazario would tell you what he felt necessary. This shows that the reason Chino doesn't like Bodega is because he feels he cannot trust him. Compared to Bodega, Nazario is much more shady and unpredictable and Chino does not like being in the dark.

Why does Chino refuse to work with Nazario?

Chino refuses to work with Nazario because they are two different people. Nazario is a man who will do almost anything to get what he wants, while Chino is a man who believes in doing what is right. During a conversation between the two, Nazario was making Chino an offer but Chino responded by saying, "I'd rather make five bucks honestly and spend it knowing it's all mine than fifty and worry about my back". Nazario disagreed and responded by telling him, "You live small and you'll die small... like most of the people in this neighborhood you think that things are impossible". This shows the differences between the two's mindset when achieving something.

  2. When Bodega tells Chino: "...but if you see God he won`t seem that powerful anymore," what does this show about Bodega?

Bodega tells Chino: "...but if you see God he won`t seem that poweful anymore" this shows that Bodega is pompous. As Bodega and Chino are walking to P.S. 172 to see Vera, they talk to a man called Ebarito that tells Chino to do him a favor and thank Nazario for the insurance that he gave him. Ebarito says that they are invited to his social club any time and that he owes Bodega. Bodega didn`t want Chino to tell Ebarito his real name and so Chino told Ebarito that his name was: "Jose Tapia." After this conversation, Bodega tells Chino: "...but if you see God he won`t seem that poweful anymore." God is represented as being powerful and religiously important to many people. By comparing himself to God, Bodega is basically saying that he feels like he has a lot of power because he is helping many people. As a result of this, people are thanking him for what he is doing because they are thankful to him. Bodega feels like a God because he feels as if he has the power to change people`s lives in a positive way therefore, this causes him to be pompous.

    1. Bodega's intention was to not let salazar expose Bodega for buying buildings with so called dirty money. Nario finds out that Fischman and salazar made a deal and was going to get more pieces on Bodega to get all the attention on him. Bodega knew that the cops were catching on to his little scam but it wasnt much of a noise about it so they wont care that much but Salazar was planning of exposing Bodega to the media. Bodega couldnt let that happen so he made Sapo do the job of killing salazar for him. Bodega said to Chino "With me out of the way Fischman would move in on my neighboorhood". This shows that it wasnt about rivalry between Fischman and Bodega it was about saving his neighborhood because salazar was planning on getting pieces of Bodega that would destroy his reputation and get him sent away for good, and if he was sent away the neighboorhood would be corrupt and go back to being the neighborhood is was before the young lords improved on it, a Puerto Rican neighborhood that noone takes seriously and thinks of it as nothing more than just a joke.

  4. Why is Bodega stringing Chino with him when he doesn't even tell him what is it that he really wants from him?
Chino knows that Bodega wants something from him, he just doesn't understand what because he's got nothing to give. In the book it said " The fact was that Bodega could have Nazario to hire the best private investigator in the city and trace her all the way to Florida. But then what? Blood was thicker than water and that's what he wanted, blood" Bodega is looking for the easiest way to get back with Vera and maybe even marry her. Since Chino is married to Vera's niece, bodega thinks that all his problems will be solved if he had Chino by his side when he confronts Vera.

    3. Who is Aaron Fischman and what does he have to do with Salazar?

Aaron fisherman was a man who wanted to Ruined with the bodega success. so he decided to hire a journalist named Alberto Salazar was a man that had been investigating The drug lords in in East Harlem, Aaron fischman hired Salazar to Ruin bodegas business. as bodega catch on to Salazar's plan he decided to kill him. That's when the war began between bodega and fisherman, fischman decided to respond by burning one of bodegas buildings. That's where Blanca and Chino lives. "When chino see Nazario emerging from the burning building. He had that fischman had set fire in retaliation for Salazar's death. The war, He noted was in full bloom". This is how the war started between the too.

  6. Why was Chino afraid of asking Bodega about Salazar?

In Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quinonez in book 2, round 3 we see how the topic about the reporter Salazar returns. It returns because Chino keeps wondering how he died and who killed him. Chino knows he was killed and that he was bitten on his shoulder before he died. The only person he knows that does this is Sapo, but he wants to clarify his thoughts so he wants to ask Bodega straight up but he is scared too. In round 3, we see how Quinonez writes, "You own the building,""I called out. But as I heard the water faucet I had an image, clear as day, of Sapo killing Salazar. I figured that now was a bad time to ask about it. I figured that if Bodega was right and Vera was still in love with him, nothing could ruin his day so today would be a good time to ask him anything but if he was wrong Vera I was going to save the asking for another day". (109) This quote shows that Chino was afraid of asking Bodega about Salazar because he thought that if Bodega was wrong and Vera wasn't in love with him anymore maybe all his emotions and mood would change into a negativity and then he would get in trouble or screamed at. Also, he was indecisive of whether it was a good or bad moment to ask him.

  7. What makes Bodega Dreams and Young Lords similar?

There are many examples of what makes these two stories similar but one big reason is that they fight for what they want. In the beginning of Young lords they started out with a small group of people who felt like they were being treated unfairly as citizens of the united states. So to change this they had to protest and fight to get what they wanted or else things would remain the same. As time pass and people started to recognize the Young lords more and more people joined that just weren't hispanic and were immigrants people that really believed what they believed in. Bodega dreams started out by Bodega trying to make a difference in spanish harlem and also felt like they were treated poorly. Bodega recommended to Chino that he should work with him and change the buildings that they lived in. The only difference In these two stories is that Bodega was just doing it for Spanish harlem and his kind. Other than that those are why I find these two stories similar.

  8. Does Ebarito work with Willie Bodega?

In the book "Bodega Dreams" there is a new character involve named, Ebarito Ebarito does not work for Bodega he is just simply one of thos people who support Bodega. The reason why Ebarito supports Bodega is because he g
helped Ebarito get his insurence's to be treated as a citizen. A quote that shows that Ebarito appreciated Bodega and didn't work for him was, "Si me haces el favor de decirle gracias por el seguro que me dio. I want you to know that you are welcome at my social club anytime"(pg.110). This quote shows how Bodega and Nazzario workd to get Ebarito his insurence, and Ebarito levity makes him allow Chino at his club anytime and to do him the favor and thank Bodega for him.

  9. Was bodega using Chino for something else?

In the book "Bodega Dreams", Willie finally gets to see Vera, and starts to act like Bodega need something else, but does not know how to say. Therefore Chino thoought he wanted something else because Willie seem to act as strange as the first time Chino first met him. In one quote where Chino seems to think that Bodega wants more is, "The fact was that Bodega could have easily found Vera. He could have gotten Nazzario to hire the best private investigator in the city and traced her all the way to Florida"(pg. 113). This quote demonstrates how Chino seem to have him used to find Vera, when chances wast that Bodega could have find Vera the easier. This shows how Bodega used him for something unnecessary, but tends to make deals with Chino for something else he needed, making him think that finding Vera would have led him to start using him for serious missions, or favors.

    1. Post before Sunday for full credit. Make sure to proofread for errors in grammar. Also try and focus on the most important events in the novel that develop the themes/motifs we've been talking about. The question about Ebarito is not that important or analytical. 7/10
