Will Chino do a deal with Bodega now that he knows how bad he wants him?
ReplyDeleteWhen Chino gets home from his meeting with Bodega he speaks with his wife about her aunt Veronica. He learns that Bodega was once in love with her, but couldn't be with her because her mother wanted her to marry a rich Cuban. Chino puts two and two together and realizes that Bodega wants him so that he can get back with Veronica. Chino also has something he needs from Bodega. Chino and his wife are struggling financially. He says, " We didn't want to take out loans and then have to pay off the government for twenty years. It was not a good way to start a professional career, in debt". This shows why he would want to make a deal with Bodega since Bodega can support them going through college. Chino will make this deal because it will benefit him and his family.
Good use of context to explain what is going on in the story and how it supports your answer! 10/10
DeleteWhat does Blanca`s name symbolize about her?
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 5 of “Bodega Dreams” by Ernesto Quinonez we see how Blanca`s name symbolizes her purity. When Blanca is next to Chino in their bed, she starts to talk about how she wants Chino to go to church with her. After Blanca mentions something about an “anointed” Chino asks Blanca what an “anointed” is and she responds by saying: “Someone who will one day, when he or she dies, rule with Christ in heaven for one thousand years.” Blanca means white in English. White is associated with cleanliness, positivity, and hope. Blanca is often described as being a “church girl” because she goes to church a lot and has faith in God. Religious people tend to be pure because they try to avoid sinning. This shows that Blanca`s name symbolizes that she is a person that only wants the best for people and does not want Chino (in specific) or herself to be negatively influenced by anyone. Blanca has not done anything negative like smoking weed or stealing because those are some forms of sinning and since Blanca is pure, she never wants to do those things that will erase her purity and so she avoids doing them.
Good job asking an analytical question about symbolism. Excellent use of context and analysis in your explanation. 10/10
DeleteWhy does Sapo keep bringing up Blanca?
ReplyDeleteDuring chapter 5 of Bodega Dreams, Sapo keeps bringing up Blanca because Blanca is what is distracting Sapo from working and being with Sapo. During a meeting with Bodega Chino thinks about entering a business move but suddenly Chino says in his head: "Part of me really wanted to be there, to be part of it. But i had Blanca and the baby to think about and i wasn't about to throw that away. I was happy with Blanca"(pg.38). This demonstrates why Sapo always brings up Blanca, because since Chino doesn't want to upset Blanca he decides not to join, which gets Sapo mad because he is not being loyal and being his "pana" and being there for him, instead he does to Blanca. Which causes Chino to choose over Sapo, making Sapo bring up Blanca because she distracts Chino for not being there for Sapo.
I think you mean Chino instead of Sapo in the first sentence. Make sure you proofread. Otherwise, good analysis. 8.5/10
Deletewhat does chinos deal have to do with Vera
ReplyDeleteVera is the answer to chinos prayers because chino is now going to have a family and needs to financially and physically supported but Chino is still searching for a job to support his family. Chino was offered a job by Bodega but he didn't want to take it because he wanted to be their more for his family. But he needs to have a better environment for the arrival of the new baby. Bodega has been searching for his old love back when he was a young lord. Blanca was telling a story to chino and was saying" she was going to marry this guy she was in love with, some street activist or something. At that moment he knew the street activist was Bodega and Vera was the girl Bodega was looking for. So chino is going to make a deal with Bodega to get a better living environment for his family in exchange for Vera his old love. This would be great for Chino because you have to do what you have to do to support your family. Also bringing Vera to Bodegea would mean a better relationship between chino and bodega
Make sure to use proper punctuation and capitalization. Good job explaining context of story in the first 3 sentences. Make sure you use close quotes. 8/10
DeleteWhy does the author write "I didn't know what Sapo meant but I didn't press him about Blanca because back then I had no idea how important she was to Bodega"?
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 4 of "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez we see how the writer keeps bringing up Blanca and Chinos relationship. He keeps trying to send the reader the message of that Blanca and Chinos relationship has some type of relationship with Bodega. After all chapter 4 is mostly about how Bodega is trying to convince Chino to work for him. Nobody really knows why. Chino thinks is because he is smart and educated so no one would really think he is into doing "dirty things like Bodega and Sapo do. But when Chino does not take the offer of working for the great Bodega, Sapo gets mad and Chino does not really understand why. At the end of their conversation Sapo tells Chino to go home to his pregnant perfect wife but to ask her about her aunt Vera. That totally confuses Chino. We see how later on in Chapter 5, Chino finds out what Sapo meant to say when he said that about aunt Vera. Aunt Vera was Bodega's first love but their love could not be because he was a drug dealer and Vera's family did not want them together so they made her get married with someone else, someone rich, important and educated the whole opposite if Bodega. Now, Chino was the perfect key to get her back and contact her somehow. "Yeah, supposedly she was going to marry this guy she was in love with, some street activist or something, but her mother made her marry the Cuban, at least that's what they told me" (pg 46). This quote perfectly indicates that the street activist that Vera was in love with was Bodega and because he was what he was she was not able to marry him. So, we see that the reason why Sapo tells Chino to ask about aunt Vera is because at the end he wants to show that Blancas family is not really all perfect because there was one of their family members that fell in love with a drug dealer, so that family is not so perfect after all.
Don't forget to use close quotes ("dirty things"). EXCELLENT use of context. Explain in your last sentence how this all relates to your original question about how the couple is related to Bodega. 9.5/10
DeleteWhat does Blancas aunt have to do with Bodega?
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 5 in "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez we see how the author brings back some events that happened in the past. These events have to do with Bodega and Blancas family. We see how in the story Blanca's aunt Vera and Bodega had a love relationship in the past that could not happen because of their social status. Bodega was a street activist, basically a little drug dealer who was not good enough for Vera. Instead, Vera's mother made her marry some other guy who was rich, had education and was a way better guy than any drug dealer in love with Vera. But Vera was in love with Bodega. "Yeah, supposedly she was going to marry this guy she was in love with, some street activist or something , but her mother made her marry the Cuban, at least that's what they told me" (pg 46). This clearly tells the audience that Vera and Bodega were in love with each other but the only reason their love couldn't be was because her mother thought that her daughter could do way better and she didn't want her social status for the family to be ruined. Now, Bodega wants to get his first love and he is too determined into that happening. Especially with the help of Chino which is the closest thing to Bodega's first love Vera.
Very strong and complete response. Good work! 9/10

ReplyDeleteIn chapter 5 in "Bodega Dreams"by Ernesto Quinonez Bodega wants to do better for the community to show to veronica his successful. An example where it is "... his name no longer Bodega but something wlse, something politicians want on their side a community of goodwill. I pictured him finding her."I've always loved you, Vera look at me i fixed up everything just like it was before." Bodega wants to be successful to impress Vera when he sees her and she would take him back.

DeleteIn chapter 4 in "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez Sapo keeps bringing up Blanca because she doesn't like him, she thinks he is a bad influence on Chino, a kid from the streets. "What does he want" Blanca says this because she doesn't want Chino to go anywhere with Sapo because she thinks that Sapo would be the type of friend to get Chino in trouble.
ReplyDeleteThis quote is not the best choice to prove your point that Blanca doesn't like Sapo. There are other places in the text that show her dislike of Sapo more clearly. Choose a quote that strongly supports your answer. 7/10
DeleteIn chapter 5 of "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez Chino is afraid that Blanca will judge him because Blanca doesn't like the people he hangs out with. "I couldn't go home to Blanca high" this shows that Blanca knew he left his home with Sapo but if Chino would come back home to Blanca high there would be problems between them
ReplyDeleteGive more information about the story before the quote. Describe Chino and Blanca as characters and their relationship. You could also include information about Sapo. This post is too short/undeveloped. 7/10
DeleteWhy did Julio mention the name "Vera" to Blanca ?
ReplyDeleteJulio (Chino) mention the name "Vera" to Blanca because Sapo asked Chino to ask about Vera. Sapo asked Chino to tell her because he wants get Bodega his dream girl which was Vera and he wanted to help out so he told Chino so that he can know where to Vera so that Bodega can see her and talk her about their situation. Blanca told Chino that she lives in Miami and she met a rich Cubano. Bodega said, " I've always loved you, Vera. Look at me. I fixed up everything, just like it was before." Bodega shows that he really likes Vera and that he wants so bad because he loves her a lot. In page 45, Chino said, "I felt bad asking Blanca about her aunt; it was like me quizzing her on some betrayal that had never happened." Chino is putting more stress into Blanca because she don't have that much information on Vera and she don't like talking about it.
